Jupiter's Town Council advances plans for a hotel and condos at Suni Sands

4-1Town Council vote on first readings, Oct. 29

Four zoning and land-use ordinances passed first reading. Each needs a second reading for final approval.

If you care what happens at one of Jupiter's last open waterfront sites, here's where it stands. On Oct. 29, the Town Council voted 4-1 to approve first readings of four zoning and land-use ordinances. They would let developer Charles Modica build at the former mobile home park site. Council member Ron Delaney cast the lone no votes, citing the project's possible effect on seagrass.

Modica wants 44 luxury condos, a hotel with a restaurant and a spa, retail space and a 17-boat slip marina on the 10.5 acres along the Loxahatchee River. WPTV says the five-hour meeting ended with the council passing four items, and that members pushed back on a number of waivers Modica is seeking.

  • Settlement: town could own more than half the site
  • If approved, town can buy 1.4-acre view corridor for $10.5 million
  • Second readings: date not yet announced

Under the January settlement, the and the railroad right-of-way would be deeded to the town if development is approved. The Oct. 29 vote didn't cover the site plan or any individual building.

DeSantis adds Palm Beach County and six other counties to Florida's flood emergency

If you live in Palm Beach County, you're now under Florida's flooding state of emergency. Gov. Ron DeSantis amended Executive Order 26-227 on Wednesday to add Glades, Hendry, Lake, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Seminole and Volusia counties. NewsRadio WIOD says Riviera Beach and Port St. Lucie have some of the worst neighborhood flooding in the state.

The emergency now covers 14 counties

DateCounties covered
Mon., Nov. 2Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie
Wed., Nov. 4Glades, Hendry, Lake, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Seminole, Volusia

The declaration lets the state activate the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard as needed. It also lets the Florida Department of Transportation close roads and allows tolls to be waived for emergency help or evacuations. WPTV reports the county's Emergency Operations Center is at Level 2, a partial activation.

Over 22 inchesof rain fell on parts of West Palm Beach, Commissioner Gregg Weiss said

Weiss called it the kind of extreme event some characterize as a "one-in-1,000-type" storm.

  • Counties now covered: 14, seven added Wednesday
  • Refills: up to a 30-day emergency supply in Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie
