COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local organizations are stepping in to help seniors who may lose SNAP benefits on November 1 by providing food boxes or Publix gift cards—about 20 of the affected clients are Holocaust survivors in their 80s and 90s. Meals on Wheels Palm Beaches is also waiving cost-share fees to help seniors manage rising expenses during the shutdown. WPBF
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sea turtle nesting season will end Friday, Oct. 31, and Loggerhead Marinelife Center has recorded a record 21,000 nests along a 9.5-mile beach this season that began in March. Leatherbacks had around 300 nests, loggerheads about 12,000, and green sea turtles over 8,000 nests while some nests may incubate into December as rough tides cause beach erosion — residents are advised to contact local wildlife authorities if they spot a washback. - ➤ Bold and Breastless is a nonprofit that teaches families about cancer by sharing personal stories and guiding them during doctor visits — executive director Shondia Sabari, a breast cancer survivor, stresses that early detection can save lives. WPBF
- ➤ Kandi Schmitz, a local stroke survivor who suffered her stroke at 32 while training for a half-marathon, recounted her recovery journey and recent breast cancer diagnosis during World Stroke Day on Oct 29. She stressed the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms and acting fast – every minute counts. WPBF
- ➤ Health officials issued a no swim advisory for several Florida beaches (Dubois Park, Jupiter Beach Park, and South Inlet Park) after tests found high levels of bacteria in the water; they also warned residents to avoid swimming at Charlie Leighton Park (Martin County) until the water is safe again. WPBF
- ➤ Stephen Garito had a stroke at his Palm Beach home in March last year, but his wife Maria quickly used the FAST method—face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech and time to call 911—to call for help and save his life. WPBF
