CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 200 community leaders gathered for the Suits for Seniors 4th annual Scholarship and Awards Breakfast — celebrating outstanding high school graduates who completed the mentorship program.  The Palm Beach Post
  • Florida resident Devon Singletary was cast in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel (Sunrise on the Reaping) after an open casting call in May; he will portray Blair, the best friend of a young Haymitch Abernathy as the film is set to be released on November 26.  Palm Beach Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Edna W. Runner Education Center is holding its second annual Drive Shack Challenge on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Drive Shack in West Palm Beach—this event supports at risk students with after-school tutoring and community engagement. Supporters who cannot attend can donate online to help keep the center’s programs running.  WPBF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • It’s Day 27 of the government shutdown and many local food banks are bracing for more families needing food as USDA funds will not cover usual SNAP benefits. Palm Beach County’s Food Bank, serving 160,000 SNAP recipients, and Treasure Coast banks are launching emergency fundraising and volunteer drives—seeking community help amid the busy holiday season.  WPBF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Sandy Munoz, CEO of the Children’s Healing Institute, said at 3 p.m. on Monday that the organization launched the Raising Resilience Campaign to raise $300,000 to expand support from 175 to 525 at-risk families in Palm Beach County — over 1,000 children enter the welfare system and more than 130 newborns are in NICUs each month — amid growing demand. The campaign will build the needed infrastructure and increase services for families in crisis.  CBS12 News
