COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit Hispanos Unidos holds quarterly workshops for Palm Beach County families to learn about essential services — including health, legal rights, and personal finance — while partnering with local agencies to remove language and cultural barriers. The next session is scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Palm Beach County Library and will focus on education.  WPBF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Commissioner Sara Baxter’s bid to cut the Homeless Coalition’s $150,000 county funding ended Sept. 30 after officials agreed the nonprofit helps local residents gain stable housing—she had questioned the group after it did not host its annual Mayors’ Ball at a local venue. The coalition, which raised $2.7 million last year, runs key programs like job placement and rent assistance and its new executive director will soon offer more details.  The Palm Beach Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Palm Beach County Mosquito Control sprayed aerial insecticides at night in impacted areas as heavy rains increased mosquito activity—this followed a Department of Health advisory on Wednesday after sentinel chickens tested positive for West Nile virus. No human cases have been reported and residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites.  WPBF
  • Scientists at Wertheim UF Scripps Institute in Jupiter received four federal grants totaling $15.7 million to study drugs that may put HIV to sleep. One grant for $4.8 million supports Susana Valente’s team as they test a drug that stops the virus from reading its genes—this work may lead to better treatment options for people with HIV.  The Palm Beach Post
