- ➤ HarbourFest is a new coastal country music festival scheduled at Plaza Down Under on the Riverwalk in Jupiter on Oct 18 and Oct 19—expected to draw about 5,000 attendees with local bands and food vendors. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Florida's minimum wage increased to $14 per hour with tipped workers earning at least $10.98 as of Tuesday and will remain at this rate until Sept. 30 when it will rise to $15, following a voter-approved plan from 2020. The change is part of a gradual wage increase set by state law. WPBF

- ➤ Federal officials warn that if a government shutdown continues, many Florida homeowners may not renew their flood insurance—90% of which is provided by the National Flood Insurance Program—hindering home sales and coverage during hurricane season. WPBF
- ➤ Palm Beach County Fire Rescue warned residents about lithium ion battery fires after a live burn demonstration showed that malfunctioning batteries can heat to 800 degrees and explode like missiles. The fire marshal advised people to call 911 if they notice a heavy metal odor, hissing, or smoke from devices (such as smartphones and laptops). WPBF
- ➤ Today, multiple Florida laws go into effect including a new minimum wage of $14 and rules that require flood risk disclosures, revise utility relocation funding, increase penalties for driving offenses and sexual crimes, and create offenses for abandoning dogs during disasters—these new regulations will affect landlords, drivers, and property buyers statewide. - ➤ Today, Florida law takes effect that allows the death penalty for those convicted of sex trafficking children under 12 and raises the penalty for luring children to a third-degree felony punishable by up to 5 years in jail—making Florida the only state to allow execution for such crimes. WPBF
- ➤ Tuesday, Palm Beach County commissioners voted unanimously to continue their contract with the Homeless Coalition—this agreement supports a 10-year plan to end homelessness and provides about $150,000 each year for staffing. The vote followed budget concerns, and coalition leaders will soon provide more details on their operations. WPTV

- ➤ The Florida Department of Health warned beachgoers to avoid swimming at Midtown Beach after a Sept.29 test found 523 parts enterococcus per 100 milliliters, far above the safe level of 35 parts—officials will retest the water today to see if levels drop.
