  • Project Thanksgiving returns for its 35th year as the campaign will begin on October 13 to help Palm Beach County families facing food insecurity. CBS12 News & United Way are joined by new sponsor iTHINK Financial, which will set up donation drop-off boxes at several locations to support nearly a dozen local agencies.  CBS12 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Juno Beach officials say that 6-foot waves are causing dangerous conditions for swimmers and boaters today—citizens are urged to swim near lifeguards as rip currents and beach erosion increase the risk.  WPBF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new law called Trooper's Law will take effect Oct. 1 to protect dogs during natural disasters—making it a felony to abandon a tied dog and a misdemeanor to leave an animal without proper food, water, or exercise.  WPBF
  • Twenty-three cities and two counties including Jupiter sued state officials on Sept. 29 in Leon County to block SB 180—a law stopping local leaders from setting tougher building rules and seen as favoring developers. Supporters say the law will help rebuild after storms but critics claim it limits local home rule.  The Palm Beach Post
  • A set of new Florida laws will take effect on October 1 and include increased penalties for evading law enforcement, tougher rules for repeat DUI manslaughter offenses, and stronger protections for children while also requiring landlords to disclose flood risks. The laws further address mental health reforms in the justice system and enhance safeguards for judges, utility workers and dogs during natural disasters.  CBS12 News
  • Florida's new laws will take effect October 1 and will impose stiffer penalties for fleeing police, repeat DUI offenses, and impersonating officers while also protecting pets during disasters, improving mental health evaluations in the justice system, and requiring landlords to disclose flood risks.
