Good morning, Jupiter. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 19th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • September is Kinship Awareness Month, recognizing relatives and close friends who care for children when parents cannot; ice skating Special Olympics athlete Becky Lohr said her composite family (including her brother and coaches) helped her overcome early hardships and now supports her as she seeks safe housing in Palm Beach County.  CBS12 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joel Flores became Palm Beach County’s first Hispanic commissioner—ending 114 years without one—and said he plans to support future Latino leaders. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by Florida Atlantic University, University of Florida, and Florida Polytechnic University found that only 16% of recyclable materials are recovered statewide, while Palm Beach County’s dual-stream system reached a 90% rate and generated $14.7 million from 3.4 million tons recycled. Counties along the Treasure Coast reported recovery rates as low as 4% due to contamination challenges—leaving Florida to face growing landfill issues without a new statewide recycling plan.  CBS12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General James Uthmeier issued a memo that makes open carry the law after a court ruled the ban unconstitutional—Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said his deputies will continue to assume everyone is armed until proven otherwise.
