ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is asking residents to report and share photos of the rare rainbow snake, a nonvenomous reptile that has not been seen since February 2020 + sighting reports will help track its current habitat and support conservation efforts.  Palm Beach Daily News
  • Today, Hurricane Erin is causing big swells and beach erosion along the east coast that threaten sea turtle nests and hatchlings—experts from Loggerhead Marinelife Center report that strong waves may wash away nests from over 20,000 recorded along 9.5 miles of northern Palm Beach County beach.  WPBF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The railroad crossing at Donald Ross Road in Jupiter closed at 6 p.m. Wednesday for scheduled maintenance and will reopen Saturday at midnight—drivers should follow posted detour routes on Alternate A1A and Military Trail. Authorities in Palm Beach Gardens will also enforce closures on Northlake Boulevard starting Saturday.  WPBF
  • Jupiter police chief Michael Barbera will retire on Oct. 3 after nearly 30 years of service when he meets a mandatory retirement requirement through the Florida Retirement System’s Deferred Retirement Option Program — DROP. The town will announce plans for a new police chief closer to his retirement date.  The Palm Beach Post
  • Florida East Coast Railway began track maintenance that closed eastern lanes on Donald Ross Road in Jupiter between Alternate A1A and Military Trail from Aug.20 6 p.m. to Aug.23 midnight, and lanes on Northlake Boulevard between Alternate A1A and Mac Arthur Boulevard will close from Aug.23 6 p.m. to Aug.26 midnight for the work. Traffic will be detoured with westbound drivers on Donald Ross Road sent along Alternate A1A to Indiantown Road or PGA Boulevard, eastbound drivers along Military Trail, and Northlake Boulevard drivers following Alternate A1A north to PGA Boulevard and Congress Avenue to Blue Heron Boulevard (police will direct traffic).  The Palm Beach Post
