- ➤ Major Hurricane Erin remains a Category 5 storm in the Atlantic and is not expected to directly impact Florida—offshore large swells may increase rip current risks along our beaches as the storm holds its strength through next Thursday. WPBF
- ➤ The Loggerhead Marinelife Center announced on Tuesday that sea turtle hatchling season has begun and hatchlings will emerge from nests until the end of the nesting season. Locals can join the Hatchling Discovery (offered Wed-Sun in August and Sat-Sun in September from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.) and watch a hatchling release (available daily in August from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.) as the turtles start their journey to the ocean. - ➤ Hurricane Erin strengthened to a Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds on August 16 and was expected to intensify to Category 4 with 150 mph winds while moving west-northwest at 20 mph; the storm did not directly threaten Jupiter but produced dangerous surf and rip currents along Florida’s beaches — local officials advised residents to remain alert.
