CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies responded to a welfare check on Tuesday at a Loxahatchee home on 77th Place North and arrested 20-year-old veterinary technician Erica Savino after finding six underweight horses living in manure-filled pens, as she is accused of neglect and animal cruelty (facing charges for aggravated animal cruelty, animal cruelty and confinement of animals).  CBS12 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Workers built a retaining wall along the shoreline of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area on July 10 to stop erosion. The $16 million project also included in water wave breaks, pilings, artificial reef structures and planting of upland and tidal vegetation with mangroves.  The Palm Beach Post
  • NOAA updated its hurricane forecast (released on August 7th) for an above-normal season, predicting 13 to 18 named storms, five to nine hurricanes, and two to five major hurricanes while four storms have already formed and officials warn the peak period is ahead. CSU says Florida is at high risk (with an 89% chance of a named storm tracking within 50 miles) and urges residents to prepare by stocking up on supplies.  Palm Beach Daily News

  • Jupiter now has six federally-designated quiet zones at its railroad crossings where trains do not sound their horns, following a year of planning by town officials; police will drive by to keep drivers safe (community input helped shape these plans).  CBS12 News
  • Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens have created quiet zones at six railroad crossings after receiving Federal Railroad Administration approval. Jupiter’s quiet zone began on August 8 and police will patrol the crossings until August 11 to remind drivers to be cautious—residents have long complained about the noise.  The Palm Beach Post

  • Dr. Michael Rizkalla from Jupiter Medical Center advised parents to schedule pediatric check-ups and update vaccinations before school begins—ensuring children have hydration plans for sports and that schools have emergency contacts and allergy information on file.  CBS12 News
