CRIME NEWS

  • Riviera Beach police are seeking first-degree murder charges for 27-year-old Roberto Ernest Torres—who fatally shot his girlfriend at the Thousand Oaks gated community on Wednesday at 6:25 p.m.—after he turned the gun on himself, leaving him in ICU.  CBS12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Lucy's Law on June 27—named after 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez who died in a 2022 boating crash—which will increase the penalty for boating under the influence manslaughter through a minimum four-year prison sentence and will take effect July 1.  The Palm Beach Post
  • Governor DeSantis signed Lucy's Law on June 27, changing penalties for boating under the influence by imposing a four-year prison minimum for manslaughter and adding charges for leaving a crash scene or giving false statements — the law, named after Lucy Fernandez, will take effect on July 1 and does not include mandatory boating education or license suspension.  Palm Beach Daily News

  • Palm Beach County is offering $3 million in deferred loans to help eligible first-time homebuyers cover purchase, closing, and new construction costs. The online application portal opens July 23 at noon and will remain open until August 20 at midnight — or until 100 applications are received — with eligibility based on household income limits, including a cap of $65,450 for one-person households.  CBS12 News
