EDUCATION NEWS

  • Following a 3.5% teacher raise approved earlier, Palm Beach School District officials warned yesterday layoffs are expected in coming weeks to balance the budget — details on specific positions are pending.  610 WIOD

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Saharan dust from the Sahara Desert is moving across the Caribbean and is expected to reach Florida soon, where it will bring hazy skies and drier air that may worsen local air quality and help limit tropical cyclone formation (noting potential risks for those with respiratory issues).  Palm Beach Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews will start work Monday, June 1, at the 990-ft Juno Beach Pier to replace the deck and railing, with officials saying no more than 10 percent of the pier will be closed and safety fences installed to protect sea turtle nesting areas (total project cost is $1.2 million).  CBS12 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida health officials said four new measles cases bring the state total to 154 in 15 counties, with cases reported in Orange and Palm Beach Counties (Palm Beach County last had a case in 2000). The CDC warns more cases will come as summer travel grows.  Palm Beach Daily News
  • Florida health officials warn that Vibrio vulnificus infections may increase as warming ocean temperatures expand the bacteria's habitat along coastal waters. Residents with open wounds or compromised health should avoid raw shellfish and exposure to warm, brackish water during the active season from June to September.  Palm Beach Daily News
