ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coral reefs protect about 25% of Florida’s coastlines from storm surge and hurricane damage by saving over $600 million a year, experts at Palm Beach Zoo said. The reefs and other natural barriers help reduce storm impacts along Jupiter’s shores + further inland areas.  WPBF
  • The 2026 hurricane season will begin June 1 as the National Hurricane Center will start issuing tropical outlooks on May 15 and NOAA ended Hurricane Preparedness Week from May 3-9 to help residents check evacuation zones and gather storm supplies.  Palm Beach Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida announced new red snapper fishing seasons, with the Atlantic season lasting 39 days and the Gulf season 140 days, set to begin the summer season on May 22 (the state now manages the Atlantic fishery). Local anglers can look forward to more time on the water in 2026.  Palm Beach Daily News
  • The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office hosted a training for nearly 120 houses of worship to learn a new alert system that sends real-time notifications about potential dangerous incidents nearby. The system will go live today and alerts venues via text, email, and voicemail — offering guidance on the appropriate response.  WPBF
  • Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office today tested two new amphibious Fat Trucks in swamp conditions ahead of hurricane season, using water + land modes to navigate challenges. Deputies improved rescue readiness during the training, noting that the vehicles are among only five in the state.  WPBF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nationwide, several snack mixes, pizzas, chips and pork rinds have been recalled for potential salmonella contamination, prompting Jupiter residents to check pantries for items like Ghirardelli cocoa mix and selected trail mixes with best-by dates up to 2027 — and health officials advise seeking care if symptoms occur.  WPBF
