EDUCATION NEWS

  • Many Florida school districts will close on Presidents Day but four counties – including Palm Beach, home to Mar-a-Lago – will hold classes on Monday, Feb. 16.  Palm Beach Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents with damaged garden plants should lightly scratch bark to check for green tissue and water soil to slowly thaw roots. Experts advise covering plants and adding mulch — steps that help protect gardens from chilly winds.  Palm Beach Daily News
  • Drought data from Thursday, Feb. 5 show most Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast in severe drought, except the coastline near Boynton Beach and Boca Raton. Okeechobee County imposed a burn ban Monday and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue advised one after less than half-inch rain fell—over three inches below normal.  WPBF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Palm Beach County commissioners approved a pilot program to build storm-rated tiny homes for people experiencing homelessness using $500k in opioid settlement funds. The county will place homes on nonprofit property and consult local recovery groups as work begins within 30 days.  WPTV
